Program: Philadelphia Writer’s Adventure

Write Your Story in the City that Gave America a Voice

Dive into the streets, stories, and ideas of old Philadelphia—the printing powerhouse that connected the thirteen colonies through the written word.

Long before there was a United States, Philadelphia’s presses were helping people separated by hundreds of miles encounter the same stories, arguments, questions, and ideas. Explore the historic libraries, publishers, and hidden literary landmarks where it all began.

Anchored at nearby Haverford College, this Writer’s Adventure is experiential and fun. This program is crafted to sharpen skills, cultivate imagination, and offer an abundance of writing time. And, of course, there will be time for hangouts with new friends and summer fun too! Join us to explore Philadelphia and write the week of July 25-31!

Literary Inspiration & Skill-Building

Explore the locale where Franklin, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Whitman, Poe, and others wrote and where Pearl Buck, abolitionist Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Frederick Douglass, early novelist Charles Brockden Brown, W.E.B. Du Bois, and more were inspired. Get a glimpse into the lives and the creative processes of literary legends and American voices who ignited the imagination of the world.

Steep yourself in the history of Independence Hall, colonial cemetery, the American Philosophical Society, and more. Historical settings filled with personal artifacts and stories create a connection that transcends time.

Generous Time for Writing

Instruction by a professional writer, talented program assistant mentors, and the supportive atmosphere of the Philadelphia Writer’s Adventure encourage students to cultivate their voices and ideas. Students have generous time for writing each day, often in tranquil settings nestled in the bustling Historic District of this vibrant city. Immersive environments like Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens encourage playfulness and creative risk-taking.

Tour and write in these special spaces. Feel the extraordinary possibilities – stories waiting to be told. And add your voice to history as a writer and storyteller.
