Returning in Summer 2027! This new program in the Literary Travel Adventures series is anchored at the University of Edinburgh, one of the world’s oldest universities. Founded in 1583, University of Edinburgh is located in the bustling town with dorms at the foot of majestic Arthur’s Seat. Recognized as a leading research university, the University of Edinburgh is the alma mater of David Hume, Robert Louis Stevenson, Charles Darwin, Alexander Graham Bell, and Pippa Middleton.
Great Books students immerse themselves in the pages of unforgettable and exciting literature as we explore the very landscapes that inspired literary legends. Outings may include Edinburgh Castle, Greyfriars Kirkyard, the National Museum, and more exciting literary and historical destinations.
This one-week program anchored at University of Edinburgh offers the Great Books experience in the heart of an ancient and magical land of Mary Queen of Scots, Braveheart, and Robert the Bruce.
Academics
We will spend the mornings in Shared Inquiry seminars and discussions delving deeply into the literary and philosophical heritage of Scotland, a small country whose thinkers, poets, and novelists nonetheless shaped the history of literature in English.
During this wide-ranging and exciting exploration of Scottish literature and philosophy, we’ll consider the problem of free will and the social origins of morality through the works of philosophers of the eighteenth-century Scottish Enlightenment, read poetry by Scotland’s greatest historical and living poets, delve into a mid-twentieth-century novel which still feels strikingly modern today, and more!
Travel & Cultural Exploration
In the afternoons and evenings, we will explore the magnificent landscapes and neighborhoods on and around Edinburgh’s bustling and beautiful Royal Mile to experience the best of Edinburgh’s culture and history. We will enjoy walking tours and other adventures that dive into the sites that inspired literary heroes and villains like the ever-logical Sherlock Holmes. The dueling personalities of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde The magic of Peter Pan and Harry Potter. The cunning Long John Silver.
Outings may include the National Museum, Greyfriars Kirkyard, Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh Castle, Mary King’s Close, Scottish Storytelling Centre and other points of literary and historical significance.
This residential program for students in rising grades 9-12 and gap year can be combined with our program at Oxford and Dublin for a longer experience. Learn more about Great Books Literary Travel Programs and see the schedule for a typical day at camp.
