New for 2026 – Join us in Italy! This new program in the Literary Travel Adventures series is set in magical and historic Verona with a visit to Venice too! In the heart of Northern Italy and world-renowned as the setting of Romeo and Juliet, every stone and every path in the enchanting city of Verona has a story. Tales of gladiators, artists, Shakespeare’s famous star-crossed lovers, along with the famed canals and gondolas of the floating city of Venice offer a breathtaking look into the past.
Together Great Books travelers will explore the ancient grandeur of these incredible cities. Outings may include the imposing fortress and rich collection of art of the Castelvecchio. The best-preserved Roman amphitheater in the world, the Areni di Verona. Renaissance garden, Giardino Guisti. And the lively Piazza delle Erbe.
Residential Program
We are thrilled to be heading to Verona and Venice, Italy! Wander, dream, and trace the layers of history from Roman amphitheaters and medieval castles to Renaissance gardens, vibrant piazzas, and the famed canals in the beautiful cities that have inspired centuries of art and culture.
Academics
Students spend mornings taking part in lively Shared Inquiry seminars and discussions honing critical thinking skills as they explore Italian and world literature. Readings are likely to include works by Shakespeare and Dante as well as Renaissance tales by Bandello and others. All reading and discussion is in English.
Cultural Exploration
Itinerary highlights will include daily outings to not-to-be-missed sights like Arena di Verona, Castelvecchio, Juliet’s House, Piazza delle Erbe, and the city’s renowned museums, as well as an escape from the center to the peaceful Giardino Giusti.
As we immerse ourselves in the history, art, and culture of Italy, students will also have the opportunity to enjoy authentic Italian cuisine – fresh pasta, handmade gnocchi di patate, hearty polenta, and, of course, gelato and tiramisù.
