New! Great Books Literary Travel Adventure will head back to Athens, Greece. The birthplace of democracy, Athens was central to the development of Western Civilization. The influence of Athens’ great thinkers in philosophy, science, and mathematics can still be felt in daily life today.
Great Books students will walk in the footsteps of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, Hippocrates, Aeschylus, Thucydides, Epicurus, and others as we explore this significant and dynamic city. Outings will include the Agora, Parthenon, Temple of Zeus, Kerameikos, and more.
Residential Program
We are returning to Athens, Greece for Summer 2026! Where better to read, explore, and engage in the life of the mind than in the birthplace of Socrates and so many other great thinkers!
Academics
Students spend mornings taking part in lively Shared Inquiry seminars and discussions both in the classroom and in the very places renowned philosophers and thinkers challenged themselves and their ancient audiences as they grappled with the formation of a first democracy. Our curriculum will be replete with foundational Greek texts and world literature including works by Plato, Aeschylus, Homer, and more. All reading and discussion is in English.
Cultural Exploration
Daily outings will include must-sees like the Parthenon, Temple of Zeus, Ancient Agora of Athens, Kerameikos, and museums in Athens as well as an escape from the city to coastal Nafplio.
As we revel in the history, art, and culture of Athens, students will also have the opportunity to enjoy authentic Greek cuisine like dolmades, souvlaki, gyros, kolokythokeftedes, deliciously sweet loukoumades, and more.
This residential program is for students in rising grades 9-12 and gap year. Learn more about Great Books Literary Travel Programs and see the schedule for a typical day at camp.
