On-Campus Enrollment Now Open!

We are thrilled to be planning Summer 2023 On-Campus programs. There will be a host of exciting choices for students entering grades 6-8, grades 9-12, and graduating seniors!  We are offering multiple weeks of great On-Campus Programs starting in late June. We will be on the following campuses: Amherst College, Stanford University, Northwestern University, and Haverford College. Our abroad programs will be in Dublin and Oxford!  

Just like last summer, we are committed to providing quality enrichment for students in locations that have excellent, established health and safety regimens in place.

Join Us for Amazing Academics and Fun!

An independent program with an over twenty-year history of inspiring readers, writers, thinkers, and leaders, Great Books Summer Program  brings together bright students from all around the world.  Great Books students engage with enduring texts of literature and philosophy  to discover and explore the great human issues and questions as they develop important close reading and critical thinking skills. 

Advanced reading selections, discussion groups, and seminars led by a faculty of distinguished professors and scholars from some of the best universities and colleges around the world help students take command of their own best thinking and powers of expression. Great Books Summer Program delivers excellent preparation for seminar-style college classes, for the life skill of thinking well on one's feet, and in no small measure the SAT critical thinking section.

Great Books is proud to return to the campus of Haverford College, one of America's leading liberal arts colleges.  Haverford's history of humanitarian and civil rights advocacy, an honor code governing student life, and a legacy of civil discourse make the college the ideal environment for Great Books Summer Program.

An exquisitely beautiful campus, Haverford is home to the oldest college arboretum in the nation. Throughout campus, the ancient oaks and fragrant pines continue to provide shade and calm to the community.

Great Books & Writer's Workshop at Stanford University

We are pleased to launch our 18th year as guests on the campus of Stanford University. Here amongst the majestic California palms, young people from around the world gather at Great Books to experience reading, discussion, and life on the campus of one of the greatest universities in the world. 

Faculty sponsor, Professor Rob Reich, typically joins us for one of the highlight seminars of the program while Dr. Chris Bobonich of the Philosophy Department invariably casts a spell with his dynamic lectures.  Join us for one week or two of Great Books Seminar and Discussion programs and for a week of Writer's Workshop on the beautiful campus of Stanford!

We held the first session on the campus of Amherst College 22 years ago with Amherst professor and Great Books co-founder Dr. Ilan Stavans.  We're always thrilled to return to where it all began for GBSP!

Amherst College, founded in 1821, is widely regarded as one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the world.  Amherst is known for its rigorous academics and is the home of the nation's first undergraduate neuroscience program.  Located in western Massachusetts, close to the beautiful Berkshires, Amherst draws students from nearly every state and more than 50 countries.

We will be offering Seminar and Discussion programs and a Writer’s Workshop for students who are eager to explore the art of writing in all forms.

Northwestern University

We are thrilled to be planning to head back to Northwestern University in 2023!  Founded in 1851, Northwestern is one of the country’s leading private research and teaching universities. This world-ranked, prestigious school is adjacent to Lake Michigan. The historic culture of nearby Chicago is rich with landmark architecture, visual arts, and strong musical roots in blues, soul, and jazz. 

Both day and residential programs are planned for this campus.  Join us for Literature and Discussion programs on this prestigious university campus.

Literary Dublin

For Rising Grades 9-12

Dublin, Ireland

One Week Program

July 30 - Aug 5

Great Books is excited to return to Dublin! 

Our one-week program will be anchored at Trinity College and offers a Great Books experience rich with Irish literature, history, and storytelling. Students at Literary Dublin spent the mornings in Shared Inquiry seminars and discussions focused on the works of great Irish writers such as Joyce, Yeats, Swift, Shaw, and Wilde. Students met writers, actors, and playwrights from the contemporary Dublin literary scene.

To fully experience the history of this literary treasure, we spent the afternoons touring the sites in Dublin and exploring the places that inspired this city's great stories. Excursions includeded Trinity College, a literary walking tour of Dublin, the James Joyce Center, Marsh's Library, and more.

Even better when combined with our Literary Oxford program!

Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world, founded in 1096. Its spires and towers soar above a beautiful, tree-lined medieval town filled with the distinguished and historic colleges that comprise one of the greatest universities in the world.

    The unique atmosphere of ancient cathedrals, abbeys, a central castle, and 38 constituent colleges is breathtaking to behold, making Oxford a magnet for students and scholars from around the world.

    Celebrating 22 Years of Summer On-Campus

    Summer 2023 marks Great Books Summer Program’s 22nd year. Since our first year, we’ve brought together thousands of students from across the USA and around the globe on the campuses of many of the world’s best universities and colleges.

    Here’s a look at additional campuses where Great Books Summer Program has spent summers past:

    Tall Ship Adventure - Portland, ME

    A literary voyage of a lifetime! This unique program marries the study of maritime literature and lore with living and learning to sail on a tall ship. Participating as crew members, students learn alongside the tall ship training staff.  Time is split between seminar and discussion and sailing education. Visits to coastal islands and whale watching too.  

    Stanford Center at Peking University - Beijing, China

    Three years of amazing literature and discussion in Beijing! Stanford Center at Peking University (SCPKU) is the result of a long-term partnership between Stanford University and Peking University, two preeminent global institutions. Established in 2012, SCPKU facilitates local academic exchange, collaboration, research, and outreach activities. 


    Literary Travel Adventure - Madrid, Spain

    A vibrant cultural center and perfect backdrop for the exploration of literature, culture, aret and history. Students immersed themselves in the sights, sounds, and history of Spain.  This special program offers students the ability to dive into Spanish culture whether they speak Spanish or don't know a word.  All reading and discussion is in English, but those wishing to hone their Spanish skills will have ample opportunity to practice if they choose.
