This summer, novelist, playwright, screenwriter and director Peter Hedges will be coming to Amherst. His first novel, What's Eating Gilbert Grape was the basis for a film starring Johnny Depp and a young Leonardo DiCaprio (who was nominated for an Academy Award for this role).
Hedges not only wrote the novel, he also wrote the screenplay. This would be the first in many books he would adapt for the screen, including Jane Hamilton's A Map of the World and Nick Hornby's About a Boy , for which Hedges was nominated for an Academy Award.
In an interview he did with Entertainment Weekly , he listed his favorite film adaptations. Have you read these books and seen these movies? What is your favorite movie based on a book?
