Great Books Online "My Summer’s Saving Grace"

Written by Great Books on Friday, January 7, 2022

Congratulations to Great Books Camper, Alex from PA who is headed to Wellesley University in the fall. She shared an excerpt from her college essay featuring her summer 2020 Great Books Online experience.

"I have a passion for anything that involves reading and writing. During summer 2020, I signed up for a virtual literary/creative writing camp to fill the long, muggy days. I had low expectations. I knew what it was like to sit on Zoom all day from school in the spring; how could I expect a camp program to be better?

Little did I know, this literary camp would be my summer’s saving grace. I spent days workshopping my writing, reading philosophy, and memorizing poems for our “poetry cup,” a competition between the virtual study groups. Being in an environment, albeit virtual, where all I needed to do was read, write and discuss filled me in a way nothing had before. I started to wish all my classes were as fulfilling and exciting as these seminars.

At Wellesley, I know I will find peers who are excited to dig into literature and are taking English classes for the pure joy of learning. But the best part of my online camp was taking classes with professors who were passionate, intelligent, and led meaningful discussions-the kind of professors I know I will find at Wellesley. "

Congratulations from all of us at Great Books, Alex! We know this is just one of the many big successes ahead for you!
