Steven Volk, Ph.D.

Dr. Steve Volk is Professor of History Emeritus at Oberlin College where he taught Latin American history and museum studies for 31 years. He continues to serve as the director of the Center for Teaching Innovation and Excellence. In 2011, he was named US Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. In 2001, he was recognized by the government of Chile for his efforts in helping to restore democracy to that country.

"Every class is a discussion because that is the way that students can construct their own understanding and knowledge, rather than me telling them what's going on," he said. “Having more discussion in class has caused a tremendous increase in students' participation and interest in the topic”, he said. "There is no one that can really not pay attention, they are not falling asleep, they are not on Facebook, and they are not doing a lot of things that might happen in a lecture, because they are the ones who have to be participating.
