Sterling Lord

Publishing icon, Literary Agent par excellence and author

Sterling Lord

Sterling Lord is the founder and co-chairman of Sterling Lord Literistic and has been representing authors such as Jack Kerouac and Ken Kesey for more than half a century. Born in the Mississippi River town of Burlington, Iowa, Lord graduated from Grinnell College in 1942. After serving in the air force in WWII, Lord worked in New York City for a number of magazines, including Cosmopolitan, before opening his literary agency in 1952.

As agent to Kesey, Kerouac (whose book On the Road took more than four years to find a publisher), and countless others, ranging from Jimmy Breslin, Rocky Graziano, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Dick Francis, Howard Fast, Gloria Naylor, four US cabinet members and Stan and Jan Berenstain (whose Berenstain Bears books have sold 290 million (and counting) copies in the US and Canada alone), Lord is the decisive influence and authors’ confidant who has engineered some of the most important book deals in literary history. In January 2013 he published his memoir Lord of Publishing.
